2009-10-30-Fire damages Associated Management building in Holbrook (By Tom Gorman)

A two-alarm fire that damaged a local business is under investigation.

A Holbrook firefighter sustained minor injuries on Oct. 23 putting out the blaze at Associated Management on Kleen Way off South Street. The company recycles and makes wooden pallets.

According to Fire Chief Edward O’Brien, the fire department received an alarm from the business at 5:12 p.m.

“There was heavy, heavy smoke upon arrival,” O’Brien said, adding that the firefighters could see smoke from a distance as they were responding to the scene.

The chief said that firefighters extended a line inside while another line was pulled along a side of the structure and a panel had to be cut to gain access to the blaze.

The fire was located at the far rear portion of the inside of the building, where wooden pallets are grinded and rebuilt.

Although sprinklers activated and helped contain the flames, O’Brien said that a second alarm was sounded because of the “high fire load” caused by the wood grindings and difficult accessibility.

“We had to go through the whole building to get at it,” he said.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour, and the last of the firefighting crews left the scene at 9:20 p.m.

One firefighter was treated and released from a local hospital for minor injuries that he sustained.

O’Brien said that the State Fire Marshall’s office is investigating the cause, but that is likely accidental.

“There may have been a spark created by grinding that started the fire,” he said.

Holbrook Fire Lt. Robert Keeman was in charge at the scene, and Holbrook Fire Lt. David Kincus is assisting the State Fire Marshall in the investigation.

Randolph, Braintree, and Avon firefighters assisted Holbrook at the scene while Stoughton covered the town.
