2009-08-20 OSHA cites East Canton company after saw severs worker's fingers
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed a $76,500 fine against S&N Pallets for alleged violations of federal workplace standards.
The agency, part of the U.S. Department of Labor, said Tuesday it had inspected S&N after a worker lost three fingers in a band saw. The company, also called Slats & Nails, was cited for allegedly failing to provide adequate guards on the saw, with a proposed penalty of $28,000.
S&N was cited for allegedly failing to remove wood dust from electrical conduit boxes, structural beams and other surfaces where it could be an explosion hazard. Lack of equipment, training and testing for hearing protection and lack of proper electrical protective equipment also were alleged in citations. The agency proposed another $48,000 for those allegations.
All of the violations are rated “serious” by the agency, meaning they could cause death or serious injury.
The company also was penalized $500 for alleged improper accident logs.
Company co-owner David Fioretto said he wasn’t going to comment on the allegations outlined by the agency. “I’ve got a lot to say, but I’m not going to say it,” he said. He did say the company plans to meet with OSHA to see if the violations or penalties can be mitigated.
S&N employs 30, making and reconditioning pallets. The company has 15 days to comply, request an informal conference, or contest the citations and proposed penalties
