Firefighters battled a large fire that ignited near a pallet-manufacturing firm in northeast Harris County Friday evening. It took more than five fire agencies to get the inferno under control.
While no one was injured, four cats that lived on the business grounds died. A fifth cat was saved by firefighters.
A firefighter was able to resuscitate the cat, named Stan, using an oxygen mask.
The blaze broke out at a family owned pallet manufacturing company at Exeter and Norlinda. Fire officials said company employees were burning old pallets when the blaze got out of hand and spread to a collection of newer pallets.
Fire also damaged a home next door to the company that belonged to the businesses owners as well as a mechanic shop. Another home nearby also suffered heat damage because of the flames.
Several fire departments had to battle the blaze because of a lack of fire hydrants in the neighborhood. Agencies had to bring in water trucks to help fight the fire.
