2008-03-04 Wood-Fueled Fire Destroys Warehouse
A raging fire on Detroit's east side finally showed signs that it was dying down about 21 hours after it began destroying a warehouse. The fire started small at 3737 Beaufait St., near Meldrum Street, the home of J&G Pallet Co. Fed by wooden pallets, the fire quickly spread and engulfed the building, collapsing the roof."When you've got pallets and it's wood like that, and you've got them stacked high and there's a lot of them, it's time-consuming," said Detroit Fire Capt. Dennis Smith.J&G is a small business with 15 employees, and it appears to be a total loss. It has been in existence for 17 years. The owner, J.D. Givhan, watched the building burn. He said he could not speculate on the cause."There is always suspicion, but no one ever knows," Givhan said.It was still too early for fire investigators to enter the building Sunday afternoon.
