2008-01-30 RFID deployment completed at Diakinisis centre

Alien Technology has completed delivery of a warehouse distribution centre system for inventory and shipment tracking to Greece-based logistics firm Diakinisis.

The system uses Gen 2 squiggle and 'M' tags plus ALR-8800 readers from Alien Technology, with RFID installation services provided by Business Effectiveness, a preferred Alien Technology solution integrator.

The Gen 2 readers and tags are being used for three separate RFID applications at the Diakinisis warehouse and distribution centre. Floor-mounted and shelf tags communicate with forklift-mounted antennas and validate pickup and inventory data. The Gen 2 M tags are applied to the concrete floor and the Squiggle tags are used on pallets and shelves. In addition, portals are used at the dock door to track the outgoing Gen 2-tagged pallets, and trucks are tagged with RFID labels.

"The project's focus was to achieve 100% traceability of the in-coming pallet shipments," says Nikos Koromilas, director of executive operations & administration at Diakinisis. "We soon realised that RFID could be expanded to include additional benefits such as using shelf tags to verify use of the correct storage location to automate control of outgoing shipments.
