2008-01-08 Fire erupts at Virginia St. storage area (DAVID JACOBS)
Fire crews from two cities scrambled Thursday night to prevent the spread of brush fires ignited by burning pallets at a North Virginia Street storage area.
Reno Battalion Chief Rik Kajans did not have a cause for the fire at Webb Court and Virginia Street that was reported about 6:15 p.m. and doused within 90 minutes.
"Sparks were flying over my house for awhile," said Leif Stensrud, who lives in a home near the fire. "All of this light was in my window. I looked out in the back, and there was all of this fire."
No injuries were reported.
The fire spread from the pallets to the brushy area, west of U.S. 395. Several Reno brush trucks and one from Sparks were dispatched.
A mobile home community was nearby, but no evacuations were ordered.
Crews remained at the scene late Thursday night mopping up from the fire.
Winds were about 30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph before the fire, the National Weather Service estimated, but had dropped to 15 to 20 mph during the fire.
"That certainly was enough to help the fire potential growth-wise," said meteorologist Scott McGuire of the weather service in Reno
