2007-06-14 Fire destroys 2 buildings at Newbury pallet business

Newbury Township- Fire destroyed two buildings of a pallet business Friday night as several local departments fought the flames.

The Geauga County Sheriff's Office got reports of the fire at 10077 Kinsman Road about 7 p.m. and dispatched the Newbury Volunteer Fire Department and several area departments to the blaze.

Witnesses said the fire had already spread to a second building by the time the first fire engines arrived. Fire engines from Middlefield, Burton, Munson Township, Chester Township, Bainbridge Township and Chardon also arrived to help battle the blaze.

It also took a long time to get water to the fire because the area does not have fire hydrants. Water had to be brought to the fire by tanker trucks.

Huge pallet stacks in the back of the buildings also caught fire. Witnesses said a large fuel tank to the side of the two burning buildings caught fire and was still sending thick black smoke into the air as the two buildings smoldered.
