2007-05-21 Melton Wants Pallet Company Torn Down
Jackson Mayor Frank Melton is trying to push forward with his plans to tear down a local business -- but the owners don't want to go.The owners of the A-1 Pallet Company on Mill Street met the city fire marshal and city inspectors Tuesday morning. They were planning a surprise inspection, but the business owners, Monte and Charlotte Reeves, refused to let them inspect the site.Melton claimed he wants it torn down because it's an eyesore, but the owners said their business is in compliance and just passed an annual inspection.
But the mayor said he's already made up his mind."I don't want to see that place at the end of this year. I don't want to see that place sitting there. I'm being straight up with you. At the end of this calendar year, it had better be gone," Melton said."The grass is always cut, trash picked up, and I think we are compiling way more," Charlotte Reeves said. The city fire marshal is now scheduled to return to the site Wednesday morning for an inspection.
