No one was hurt but investigators say the warehouse was full of wooden pallets -- fueling the flames.
It took four fire departments more than an hour to contain the fire at Best Made Pallets.
Zoneton firefighters just happened to be training nearby and noticed white smoke even before workers called 911.
"Such a heavy fire load, and inside the main warehouse we were unable to make entry into the warehouse, so we had to set up large diameter holes and master streams," said Assistant Chief Kevin Moulton.
About ten workers were inside when the fire started around 11:30 a.m. -- everyone got out safely.
Captain Josh Grimes said workers were heating some pallets in a kiln just before the fire started.
"When a worker went back to check on the pallets, he noticed a fire had began," says Grimes. "A couple of workers tried to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher, and realized they weren't getting any progress. The fire broke through a plywood wall and spread very quickly because of the amount of fuel in this industrial warehouse."
All that wood, from completed pallets, wood scraps and wood dust, fed the fire, preventing firefighters from going inside.
"We noticed the large I-beams were starting to bend and warp and we were not able to make full entry into the structure," Moulton says. "Right now when you look in there all you see is burnt up pallets and sawdust."
We tried to contact the owner of the company but those calls weren't returned. None of the workers wanted to talk about what happened, either.
