2007-04-05 Brambles joins Freightnow in fight for efficiency

If you shudder at the prospect of non-standard pallets, we have good news. The Material Multinational firm, Brambles, has joined forces with the internet based freight management service, Freightnow, in an effort to more efficiently run its CHEP business across Australia.

CHEP manages and maintains more than 280 million pallets and containers for manufacturers, agricultural producers, distributors and retailers worldwide.

Here in Australia, CHEP spends about 30 million dollars a year on freight and has ongoing relationships with many road transport companies which collect and deliver pallets and containers nationwide.

CHEP now manages these relationships through Freightnow, which was founded a year ago in an attempt to boost profits for transport operators, cut costs for freight forwarders and provide certainty for both.

"Freightnow membership allows forwarders to list shipments and operators to search for appropriate loads," says Freightnow's Managing Director, Sam Davies.

"At the most basic level, we offer a service which matches loads with empty trucks in the smartest possible way.

"But we also offer a range of additional services related to safety, transparency and accountability which are important to a company like Brambles.

"For example, Brambles will be taking advantage of Freightnow's ability to run safety audits on transport operators to ensure that they meet occupational health and safety standards," he says.

"In addition, Freightnow will ensure that all operators tendering for Brambles freight through our system comply with insurance and various accreditation.

"Indeed, forwarders like CHEP can ask a broad range of questions and view all relevant information about interested operators before accepting or declining a transport offer while operators can also access background information on forwarders," he says.

Freightnow is also a member of the Greenhouse Challenge, a Federal Government initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"More than 30 percent of trucks currently on the road are empty and that's just not sustainable," says Davies.

"We can cut the wastage, reduce the costs associated with road freight and help to ensure that the transport sector is more environmentally friendly."

More than 1,500 companies ranging from operations the size of CHEP to individuals with a need to move goods around the country have joined Freightnow over the past 12 months.

The unique Freightnow service also has more than 600 registered transport operators again ranging from the very large to the very small.

"Freightnow provides these freight forwarders and transport operators with peace of mind that comes from having all relevant information available via the internet in real time well before decisions and commitments have to be made," he says.
