2007-03-13 Firefighters believe pallet fire was arson (NICOLE KONKAL)

The Kings Mountain Fire Department said they believe someone may have intentionally set a fire that destroyed over 15,000 pallets at the old Glen Raven Mill Sunday night.

The fire started just before 10:00 Sunday night. At least six different departments responded to the scene, including Gaston County and York County fire departments.

According to the Kings Mountain Police Department, the section of the mill where the fires started is a small pallet business. Employees at the business collect old pallets and turn them into new ones. Apparently one of those pallets caught fire which quickly spread. Flames reached a nearby storage unit that contained gasoline and diesel fuel. It exploded as firefighters worked to battle the blaze. No one was hurt.

"10-15,000 pallets stacked 45 pallets high began burning and the wind was about 5-10 miles per hour so with the fuel and air, it basically acted like a blow torch," said Frank Burns, the chief of the Kings Mountain Fire Department.

Burns also isn't hopefully of finding an arson suspect.

"Where the fire started unfortunately there are no residents close by and it's on a vacant street," said Burns.

It may take weeks to find out an exact cause because the fire was so intense.

Reporter Anna Crowley is following this story. She will have more information tonight on WCNC starting at 4:30 p.m.
