2007-02-07 Italy: new logistic infrastructure at Veronamercato
Rome – Veronamercato, the central market for fresh produce of Verona has inaugurated its new logistics infrastructure at the presence of the local authorities. The platform, which measures 3150 square meters, will be managed by the cooperative Facchini Multiservizi for the next 14 years.
Facchini has a long experience – more than 50 years - in the logistics sector and it is one of the Veronamercato shareholders. Its chairman Franco Massalongo declared: "We will be able to handle up to 1000 pallets a day and to offer a 24-hour service. Veronamercato and its operators can count on us to optimize fresh produce freights, considering that trucks are often not fully loaded and that currently only 35% of them is charged in the return journey. Veronamercato has a strategic geographical position which can make it a reference point not only for local producers. For example, tomato commerce from Sicily to the Netherlands, which was before delivered through the market in Milan, is now commercialized by us."
The representatives of Veronamercato have underlined the role of efficient logistics to compete on the international market. Chairman Gian Pietro Dal Moro: "Quality is not sufficient anymore. We do need logistics, marketing and packaging to let local and Italian fresh produce more and more recognizable and competitive."
The logistics infrastructure is provided also with two refrigerating cells, which one of them can contain up to 300 pallets.
