24/06/05 Nothing Illegal About Bonfire Pallets
For attention of 'Curious' (NL, June 21). I used to work in a building firm in North Belfast which brought pallet upon pallet load of merchandise from both mainland Britain and the Republic of Ireland on a weekly basis.
We also had our own special-sized pallets for storing bulky goods on a rack system in the store. A lot of the containers did not want to take empty pallets away again, so there were times that we had a few mountains of unwanted, unused pallets in the yard.
Local youths often asked for these unwanted, unused pallets in and around the June/ July period.
So 'Curious', do not fret, they are obtained legitimately. Did anyone in authority, such as the police, ever investigate, inquire, or even wonder how the enormous amounts of perfectly good reuseable wooden pallets are obtained, only to be burned in the July bonfires?
