2007-12-03 EPAL: FORGED PALLETS TO BE DESTROYED (By Rick LeBlanc)

Cooperative pallet pools such as EPAL and the Canadian Pallet Council do not actually own pallets.  They do, however, own and/or manage their pallet trademark, and strive to maintain the integrity of the pool through various measures, including the policing of unauthorized look-alike or forged pallets. In the case reported below recently by EPAL, forged pallets had been mixed with authentic EPAL pallets, but were spotted by authorities.

Nordhausen/Sondershausen (nnz). Normally people think of plagiarism in connection with watches, CDs or perfume. Now Thuringian customs officers know better…
Customs officers of the main customs office Erfurt have repeatedly discovered forged Europallets from East Europe. During all their controls of trucks the customs officers Chemnitz have found forgeries among genuine Europallets. By this mixture of original and forged pallets the cheaters obviously have hoped to make an identification of the forgeries difficult.

The import of forged Europallets presents an infrigement upon the Trademark Act and is liable to prosecution. Furthermore the use of forged pallets is hazardous. While a genuine Europallet is designed to withstand a load of up to 2,000 kg, a user of forged pallets cannot rely on this safety standard.
The customs officers have been provided with a confirmation of a representative of the rights owner European Pallet Association e.V. (EPAL) that the pallets are forgeries. The pallets that should be put into circulation in the German market will now be destroyed.
