17/11/05 Crews Battle Blaze At Smithfield Pallet Company

SMITHFIELD Seventy firefighters from multiple agencies battled a fire Tuesday night that caused "hundreds of thousands of dollars" damage at a Smithfield pallet company, Logan Fire Chief Mark Meaker said.

The blaze at the Mortimer Pallet Co. was reported 9:34 p.m. and the first Smithfield fire truck arrived at 9:37 p.m., said Meaker, who was speaking for Smithfield Fire Chief Jay Downs, the incident commander.

The fire crews contained the blaze to the company's property, keeping it away from nearby structures.

The fire destroyed thousands of pallets and a building 300 feet by 40 feet where work was done on the pallets.

The cause has not been determined, Meaker said.

No one was hurt.
